In a week where the heavyweights in the guitar world hit Sheffield’s City Hall, we started the stint with the legendary Joe Satriani, a real heavyweight in the Blues scene.

Hailing from Westbury, New York, Satriani has a global following and the former Chickenfoot axe-man rolled into the Steel City as part of his latest UK Shockwave tour.

Strolling onto the stage in regulation shades and a grin wider than the Hudson River he got the crowd started with Shockwave Supernova, followed by Flying In A Blue Dream then Ice 9.

Satriani, nicknamed Satch, is an instrumentalist, but when you can play a guitar like he does, you don’t need words, the music does the talking.

Next up were tracks such as Not Of This Earth, Friends, Time, Butterfly and Zebra.

Stopping for brief chats with the audience, the set weaved its way through material like Crazy Joey, All Of My Life, God Is Crying and Big Bad Moon.

This was two hours of non-stop classic blues interspersed with some amazing solos, including Satriani playing the guitar with his teeth.

Backed by a top-class band, the audience simply sat in awe for the quality put before them.

Yes, instrumentalist musicians can be a matter of choice and this guy may not be on everyone’s playlist, but you should check out his work as you’ll not find many people better qualified to play guitar.

As a double bonus we got a second showing in the city by South African blues/rock guitarist Dan Patlansky.

Having been around a little while now, he broke to many people when he supported Bruce Springsteen in South Africa last year, before making his way round the UK earlier this year, popping at The Greystones in Sheffield as part of that tour.

We got the more rocky side of Dan’s work at the City Hall, but he’s another well worth checking out.
