Rapper Jay Betts is just two performances away from a dream windfall to spend on developing his music career.

The Wheatley man, 25, has worked his way up from selling his CDs on the streets of Doncaster to performing in the area finals of Open Mic UK this Sunday.

Jay, of Wentworth Road, has so far passed an audition and a regional final in Sheffield. If he makes it through the area finals with his rap mash-up of Macklemore’s Can’t Hold Us and Sway’s Still Speedin’ he will go straight to the grand final - where he will be in with a chance to win £5,000 to put towards his career development.

Jay said: “I’m quite positive. I’m really confident about it. I did really well in the last round and impressed the judges, getting a high score.

“I’m quite confident I can make it through to the grand final.”

The area final on Sunday takes place at Dewsbury Town Hall and he will be competing against the other finalists from the whole of the north of England and Scotland.
