Hairy Bikers star Dave Myers has described Doncaster as being in NORTH Yorkshire in a new BBC TV show.

The Hairy Builder, which sees the TV cookery star investigating restoration projects across the country, began its run on BBC2 last night with a look at the recent renovation of Doncaster's Mansion House.

But the star began his introduction to the show by announcing: "Doncaster - the jewel in the crown of North Yorkshire."

Twitter users were quick to point the blunder with Ian Cambe tweeting: "Just a small point Dave Myers hairy builder. Doncaster is in South Yorkshire not North Yorkshire."

Myers swapped his chef’s hat for a hard hat as he dropped into Doncaster to shoot the new television series last autumn.

He arrived at the Mansion House last October to record the opening show of the 15 part series.

Shoppers watched as the star - complete with waxed moustache - filmed scenes on the High Street in front of the building which underwent a series of major repairs.

At the time of filming he said: “It is wonderful to be here in Doncaster.

“This series is looking at some of the country’s most historic buildings and finding out the stories behind them.

“The Mansion House is a fantastic example of a building right in the middle of town with a great tale behind it.

“I studied history of art at post graduate level and it has always fascinated me. I love getting my hands dirty.”

As well as the Mansion House, he also filmed at Pontefract Castle, Bradford Civic Hall and Ampleforth College in North Yorkshire.

He went solo to record the series without TV partner Si King and during his visit to the Mansion House, learned traditional roof slating skills from builders employed by Anelay, the York-based company who helped build the Mansion House originally.

The first episode of The Hairy Builder is available to watch on catch-up
