A BRILLIANT 92 run haul from Carl Walton helped Thorne Colliery to a comfortable win over Sandal which ensured they remained a strong contender in the Division Three promotion race.

Mazhar Mir gave Thorne a sound platform with his quickfire 32 before Walton began his stand.

He was involved in a 66 run partnership with Matthew Cockburn, who made 19, before completing his time alongside Chris Head who remained unbeaten on 23.

The icing on the cake came from number 10 Gareth Stent who smacked 28 off 14 balls to boost the score to 236.

Amijal Saddiq claimed 4-54 and Kashij Najam 3-25.

Sandal looked on course to make a real challenge at the target as they stood at 100-1, largely down to Danny Riley’s 58.

But they soon fell behind the required run rate and a fine Thorne attack saw them collapse to 190 all out.

Mark Walton claimed 4-54 and Mazhar Mir 3-37 while a couple of run outs also aided the Colliery cause.

They now sit in fourth place, 16 points off leaders Yorkshire Main.

n Ahead of Thorne by seven points in third is Sykehouse who earned a 59 run triumph at Brodsworth Main.

Michael Gallagher continued his freescoring vein of form for the visitors with a stylish 68 with Richard Copley also batting well to post 41 as they reached 208-9.

The most successful Main bowler was Jon Robinson 2-23.

In reply Brodsworth were all out for 149, with Will Drury’s their chief contribution.

Richard Munro captured 3-33 and Phil Sanders 3-51.

n Fishlake slumped to level bottom of Division One after a pointless outing at Nostell St Oswald.

The young visiting batsmen had no answer to the Nostell attack and were back in the pavilion for just 94.

Ken Atkinson was the chief destroyer, claiming 5-40.

St Oswald responded with 95-3.

n A Chris Stothard-inspired Hatfield Town snatched a two wicket win with eight balls to spare against Sprotbrough to stay in the Division Two promotion hunt.

Sprotbrough batted first and posted 190-8, with Gordon Laidlaw’s 35 and 37 from Andrew Fairclough the main contributions.

Skipper Stothard bowled 14 overs to claim 3-41, while Kirk Bennett took 3-46 from his 14.

Town were in deep trouble at 61-6 as Tim Braithwaite, who finished with 4-31 from 14 overs, caused big problems.

But Stothard made an unbeaten 90 and, along with Keith Joyce’s 30, took Hatfield to 192-8.
