Former Hall Cross Academy pupil Eve Newton picked up a gold medal at the weekend’s European Universities’ Rowing Championships.

Newton, of Bessacarr, was part of Durham University’s women’s coxless four crew who represented Great Britain Universities in the event in Poznan, Poland.

The 22-year-old took up rowing as a fresher at Durham, from where she graduated this summer.

She takes up a teaching post in Oxford this week. She will also coach rowing.
