Chief executive Carl Hall has backed head coach Gary Thornton to guide Doncaster RLFC back to the Championship.

Thornton has signed a new one-year contract to remain in charge of the Dons despite their relegation to League One.

Hall said: “Gary has a proven track record and a wealth of experience in management at this level and I know he is the right man to guide us back to the Championship.

“People who know him only have great things to say about him and he shares the same vision as myself and the board on where he wants to take the club.

“In the short time Gary has been here, despite the results I have been pleased with a number of the performances. I have also been very impressed with the calibre of players he has been able to attract to the club, despite our league position, which is going to be crucial for us next season.

“We have a plan in place for next season already, talks with agents and players are already well underway and Gary knows the type of player he wants to bring to the club to make us successful next season.”

Thornton was appointed as Paul Cooke’s successor in June.
