Racing: Wednesday preview

John Gosden could have a profitable afternoon at Nottingham where the star of the show, Forever Now, should start his season with a win in the Totepool EBF Stallions Barry Hills Further Flight Stakes.

The smart colt improved with every run last season yet the son of Galileo promises to be even better this term.

A full brother to Shantaram, also trained by Gosden to win a Group Three, he could turn into one of the leading stayers this season.

He only had one run at two when he was not unexpectedly outpaced over a mile, but his first effort at three promised of what was to come when he chased home William Haggas’ Wonderstruck, not disgraced in the Ribblesdale on her next outing.

Forever Now then broke his maiden at Doncaster beaten a useful sort by eight lengths but he looked a little one-paced in the Bahrain Trophy when third to Hartnell.

He then made all to win a strong Listed race at Goodwood, beating Alex My Boy and Kings Fete who all went on to run in the St Leger.

Gosden’s charge franked the form, finishing in front of his two Goodwood rivals once more and beating them further at Doncaster but he was only sixth behind Kingston Hill.

Given the winter to strengthen up, Forever Now looks the type to thrive this season.

Gosden could also be on the mark in the opening totejackpot Go For The Big One Maiden Stakes with Occult.

The Oasis Dream colt is from a very classy Juddmonte family which includes Banks Hill and Dansili.

On his debut at Doncaster a couple of weeks ago he still looked a bit wet behind the ears behind a former Aidan O’Brien inmate, Hail The Hero, but in the final two furlongs the penny finally dropped.

He ratted home, finishing third, beaten over four lengths, yet it was a run that suggested long-term he could be the best prospect in the race.

Another one of interest for Gosden is Waady in the toteplacepot Racing’s Favourite Bet Handicap.
