Lightentertainment can make it a day to remember for trainer Chris Gordon by winning the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury.

This race has been won by a handful of relatively unexposed runners in recent years and while Lightentertainment may have had a couple more runs than the likes of My Tent Or Yours, he has certainly been making stealthy progress through the ranks.

The seven-year-old has been on quite a roll since winning at Fontwell last May, winning four of his five subsequent starts culminating in a half-length defeat of the classy Dell’ Arca at Cheltenham on Trials Day last month.

That bit of form is probably open to question as they went a strong pace upfront and Lightentertainment was able to make significant gains towards the finish when the two hurdles in the home straight were omitted.

That said, he was staying all the way to the line and really added a flourish to the relentless progress he has made, seeing him leap from a mark of 97 last May to his current perch of 131.

Lightentertainment sneaks in at the bottom of the field here and with soft ground expected following the recent cold snap, conditions will be in his favour and he can exploit his relative featherweight.

All eyes will be on Sire De Grugy as he makes his return to action in the Betfair Price Rush Chase, but preference is for Paul Nicholls’ race-fit improver Mr Mole.

Obviously the selection has plenty to find on the official figures with last year’s champion two-mile chaser, but Gary Moore has made no secret of the fact he has left a little to work on with his stable star.

Much like Sprinter Sacre at Ascot last month, that leaves a chink in the Sire De Grugy armour and it is once again the Nicholls team who can seize the advantage as they did to such good effect with Dodging Bullets.

Mr Mole has been on a sharp upward trajectory this term, with the use of front-running tactics seemingly making all the difference to this seven-year-old
