Have Doncaster RLFC made the right decision parting company with Gary Thornton?

Did whoever decided it was time for a change of head coach at Doncaster RLFC last week make the right decision?

The club stand fourth in League One today and it is highly likely that they would have beaten bottom club Hemel Stags at the weekend had Gary Thornton (pictured) remained in charge.

Much was made of the fact that the club had gone four games without a win.

But did anyone seriously expect them to beat a full-time Toronto side in the league (albeit the margin of defeat was unexpected) or mighty Leeds Rhinos in the Challenge Cup at Headingley?

They lost a tight league game at York and threw away a match-winning lead when drawing with a much-improved London Skolars side who will give most sides a game.

Hardly good reason to sack Thornton many in the game will feel.

By no means was Thornton a bad head coach but he was an unlucky one.

He came in too late to have a realistic chance of avoiding the drop following the departure of Paul Cooke midway through the 2015 campaign.

League One is a far stronger than many people suppose as a result of five Championship sides being relegated in 2014.

With the full-time Toulouse side joining last season realistically there was only going to be one promotion place up for grabs with some stiff competition for the second spot.

It is the same this season with Toronto.
