Wheatley Golf Club is celebrating its centenary year with a £280,000 investment in its course and facilities with funding from Yorkshire Bank.

The club, established in 1914, has invested the money in a new irrigation system and an extension and renovation to its club house.

The 100-year-old parkland course boasts more than 600 members including men, ladies, juniors and leisure members.

It recently held the Sheffield Union of Golf Club strokeplay competition and will this year host the Yorkshire Boys Championships.

The club has been a business banking customer of Yorkshire Bank for more than 30 years and club manager Greg Willcocks says the strength of the relationship has been vital to the club’s development and consistent high standards.

Greg said: “As a golf club we are continually looking to invest and improve the facilities for our longstanding members and guests.

“By investing in our irrigation system we can look to keep the course open for longer.

“By improving our dining facilities, we have a modern and inviting environment for members and guests to use at any time.

“We are proud to be celebrating our hundredth year this year and this investment and support from Yorkshire Bank will put us in good stead for another 100 years.”

The club house, which includes a bar, games and TV area, also has a 60-cover restaurant which hosts more than 140 events a year.

The club employs nine full-time staff, increasing to up to 25 depending on seasonal demand.

Katie Green, Yorkshire Bank relationship manager, said: “Wheatley Golf Club has established itself in the local area for the quality and condition of its golf course and high standards of leisure facilities.

“As well as hosting a number of high profile local competitions, it has a strong and loyal membership, and a popular pro shop and teaching facilities.

“This investment, as well as our continued support, means the club is well-placed to continue to grow and cater for the demands of members and guests.”
