Doncaster Wheelers are just one of the clubs benefitting from a cycling ‘boom’.
“I’ve been cycling since 1960 and I’ve never known it to be so popular,” said club chairman Trevor Siddons.
“I’d say the boom in interest goes back to the 2008 Olympics.
“We had an influx of new members after that and it received another boost with the success of Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton in the 2012 Olympics and the World Championships.
“Then there was Bradley Wiggins winning the Tour de France the same year and Chris Froome winning it last year.
“Hopefully he will give the sport another boost by winning it again this year.”
Trevor, the oldest active member of the club, camped out for several days last weekend to take in the opening stages of the 2014 race, held in Yorkshire for the first time.
Club members Paul and Ann Staton helped out as Tourmakers.
“As well as a lot of adults taking up cycling, a lot of youngsters are also getting involved,” said Trevor.
“We recently held a fun hill climb in Cusworth Park, which was backed by Doncaster Council, and it was really well supported.
“We plan to run another competition this summer and we will also be hosting another town centre race following the success of the first one last month.
“Both events are part of the Doncaster Cycling Festival, which was nearly two years in the planning.
“A lot of new members join the club for health reasons and to get out into the countryside on our social rides.
“It is mainly the younger element who are more impressed with the success of the Olympians and who are more interested in the competitive side of the sport.
“A number of members regularly take part in the club’s open 10-mile time trial based around the Hatfield Woodhouse area on Tuesday evenings during the summer,” he added.
“We’ve also got involved with British Cycling and we have three members on a training course to become coaches.
“And we’re on our way to becoming a Gold Ride Club. There are Sky rides, where people can ride the course, before all major events in this country.”
