Dons head coach Gary Thornton says new signing Louis Sheriff will add experience to his ranks despite being just 23.

Utility man Sheriff became the Dons’ latest signing yesterday after joining from fellow League One outfit Newcastle Thunder.

And Thornton was delighted to land a player with plenty of experience despite his tender age.

“He offers a great deal of utility value as he can play at full back, on the wing or in the middle unit and despite only being 23, he has a great deal of experience,” Thornton said.

“We have a young squad here and we need that experience. He has played at the top for Hull KR, in the Championship with Dewsbury and has had a successful time recently at Newcastle.”

Sheriff scored seven tries in 15 games in League One for Newcastle last season.

He came through the ranks at Hull KR, making eight Super League appearances and one in the Challenge Cup.

A spell with Redcliffe Dolphins in Australia was followed by him signing for Dewsbury at the start of the 2014 campaign. Sheriff joined Newcastle on loan that year, scoring five tries in ten games before making the permanent switch at the end of the season.

Thornton added: “Louis is another good signing for us, he rang me to tell me of his availability after leaving Newcastle and I felt it was a good opportunity to bring him to the club.

“Meeting and speaking to him, Louis is a great guy and he is also an excellent talker within the team.

“Louis knows this league well from his time at Newcastle and hopefully he can pass that knowledge on to guide some of the younger members of the group.

“He is well-respected within the game by those who have played with him and against him and I’m really pleased to have him here next season.”
