He has just been crowned a national boxing champion and now Colliston Edwards is eying up Olympic medals.

The 20-year-old became Doncaster’s latest national amateur champion by winning the England Boxing Senior Novice – formerly the ABA Novice – 56kg title at London’s historic York Hall last week.

And the Doncaster Boxing Academy fighter is already dreaming of a place at a future Olympic Games.

“I’m unbeaten in nine fights now so it’s a good run that I’m on,” Edwards said.

“Now I’ve got my eyes on the Olympic Games.

“This competition has given me the confidence I need to believe I can go on and qualify.”

Edwards’s status as Yorkshire champion earned his place in the championships before he went on to defeat Lancashire fighter Stanley Houghton in the northern final at Dearne Valley Leisure Centre in Denaby Main to earn his place in the national decider.

And the up and coming star says that the support he received along the way was crucial to his winning run.

“I was born in Jamaica, and doing well in boxing after not living the best life, knowing I can win and be number one and change my families’ lives spurs me on to be better.

“I had support from people all over Yorkshire, friends from Sheffield, Leeds, Wakefield, they all came to support me and I couldn’t have done it without them.”

The young champion trains at Wheatley’s Doncaster BA, which opened in June 2014, under coach Ian Allcock, who Edwards says has been key to his success.

“He puts in 100 per cent into helping me improve,” he continued.

“He notices your weaknesses every time, whether it be your fitness or whatever, he spots it 100 per cent of the time and helps you to work at it.

“I’ve trained at other gyms in the past, but this is where I’ve improved most and where I’ve been made into a champion.”

“I’m currently taking a week off and resting.

“But I’ll be back in the gym after that and I’m looking to have a title fight soon, maybe this month or next.”

Previous national championship winners from the town include current professionals Jason Cunningham, from Woodlands, and David Allen, from Conisbrough.
