ARMTHORPE Welfare produced the performance of the weekend as they won 3-1 at AFC Liverpool to book their place in the second round of the FA Vase, writes Paul Goodwin.

Ben Muirhead and Joe Lumsden (2) were on target for Leo Fortune-West's side, as the NCEL Premier Division strugglers found their form on Non-league Day.

It was not such a good day for Askern Villa. The Division One outfit were forced to postpone their Division One game with Albion Sports because they were unable to raise a team.

Rugby league fans in the town paid homage to the Dons on Saturday as Tony Miller's side paraded in an open top bus and enjoyed a civic reception to celebrate the club's Championship One clean sweep.

But at Castle Park there was yet more disappointment for Doncaster Knights supporters as they saw their side lose 30-29 to Scottish Premiership outfit Melrose in the British & Irish Cup.

Knights have not won a competitive fixture in their last 17 attempts - and the pressure is mounting on director of rugby Brett Davey.

At club level, Wheatley Hills made it a magnificent seven wins out of seven in North One East, prevailing 25-21 at Sheffield, while Doncaster Phoenix won 44-22 at Hullensians to go third in Yorkshire Two.

Doncaster Rovers boss Dean Saunders said his side was "robbed" at Hartlepool, where they needed a last minute equaliser from Rob Jones to rescue a point.

Saunders was furious at referee Graham Scott's decision to award Pools a penalty for some alleged grappling on Steve Howard by Paul Quinn and Shelton Martis.

Rovers, meanwhile, have been drawn away to Crewe Alexandra in the northern section quarter finals of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
