Underdogs Colliery rose to challenge
Bessacarr U16s 1 Thorne Colliery U16s 2
THORNE Colliery Under 16s were massive underdogs after being drawn away to unbeaten Bessacarr in the quarter-final of the Doncaster League Cup.
The game opened with Thorne playing five across the back soaking up early pressure but never looking in any danger. Thorne settled into their passing game and it soon became clear that Bessacarr had a fight on their hands as the game swung from end-to-end. Colliery suffered a set-back on 25 minutes when a late tackle by their captain resulted in a free-kick which was swung into the penalty area. The Bessacarr centre forward controlled the ball and fired in off the post. Colliery took charge of the rest of the half and were disappointed to be one down at half-time.
Colliery dominated the second period with their keeper not really having a save to make. Despite their pressure Colliery had to wait until 20 minutes from time to draw level, a cross from the left was brought down by Skillcorn who smashed the ball into the roof of the net from 10 yards. It was only a matter of time before Colliery scored again, this they did 5 minutes later only for it to be disallowed due to a very contentious offside decision.
Colliery's wave after wave of attacks finally paid off eight minutes from time when a shot from Baggaley was blocked, but he followed in to score from close range.
This was without doubt Colliery's best performance for some time with every player contributing to a well deserved victory.
