Thornensians get off to flying start

THORNENSIANS have made a good start to the year with January League XV wins against Baildon (25-12) and Wath last Saturday.

They narrowly lost 14-13 at Halifax with around five regular players being absent.

The Merit XV achieved a fantastic 43-0 victory over Hemsworth with Rob Bennett scoring four tries before being substituted.

Last Saturday the League XV had another great 20-10 win against Wath to bring them into third place. Two length of the field tries were scored by Martin Taylor and Tony Chappell with Brett Hunt being strongly involved in both.

Chappell added conversions and penalties for the rest of the points, as well as gaining a black eye through a try-saving tackle shared with Brett. The forwards were magnificent with excellent, driving and scrummaging and No.8 James Fenwick leading from the front.

Forthcoming events: the club will host a further mid-week floodlit game against Leconfield Army Camp in February, date to ne confirmed.

The Rugby Home Internationals begin this weekend, and anyone interested in watching England battle against the Welsh on the big screen isinvited to the clubhouse for a 5pm kick off.

England play Italy 2.30pm kick off on Sunday February 14 in Rome, then on February 27 they take on Ireland (4pm) and Scotland on March 13 at 5pm.

March 20 brings the finale from France with a 7.45pm kick off.
