Students have Paralympics in sights

DISABLED students are on track to pursue their Paralympics dreams after a leading academy established a new sports team.

Four youngsters from Trinity Academy, in Thorne, have launched the disability sports team after taking part in an event designed to showcase young local talent in the run-up to the London 2012 games.

Billy Witton, Lauren Stevenson, Giles Cuttell-Guest and Eve Butler demonstrated their athletic prowess at Doncaster's Adwick Leisure Centre.

The sporting festival was part of Sport England's Playground to Podium initiative, which aims to identify and nurture the outstanding young performers of the future.

The four students from Trinity Academy, which is sponsored by Sir Peter Vardy's Emmanuel Schools Foundation, participated in a variety of sports.

They competed in a game of boccia – a bowling game – against Danum School, losing only narrowly to a team that boasted three national champions in its ranks.

Eve excelled in a basketball challenge, while Giles showed off his driving skills in a mobility exercise.

Lauren competed in the sprint and Billy tackled throwing the javelin, as the Trinity team pulled out all the stops.

Their performances led to the formation of the Trinity Disability Sports Team, and more students are now being urged to join up.

Principal Ian Brew said: "We are all incredibly proud of our students' efforts and are looking forward to a bright future for our new disability sports team. They tackled a wide range of sports and showed a real talent for many of them.

"We are particularly keen to establish a boccia team that could enter the national championships in Blackpool each year as this is a sport where our students particularly shine."
