IN more than 50 years of supporting Rovers, Tuesday night’s defensive display was the best I have ever seen.
‘Captain Fantastic’ Rob Jones was absolutely magnificent.
Tranmere’s chairman said to me after the game that our number five had cleared some 21 corners on his own. I replied that it was not by chance but by design.
What a player, what a leader - and let’s not forget he was playing with that badly damaged thumb from Saturday’s tremendous fight back against Brentford!
Rob embodies the togetherness of this never-say-die side.
For all the doubters that remain, go and get a video of the game and watch the effort and tenacity that went into the performance.
This was against a high tempo and quality Tranmere Rovers team that sits at the top of the League One table, and I can see why.
It was great to see the performance of Billy Paynter too.
Billy’s obviously gaining in confidence after his great header against Brentford.
He worked their defence all night long.
He was unlucky not to score in the first half too, when his header hit the underside of the bar. His goal came from some sheer strength, holding off the defender, some intricate footwork and a great finish.
I must congratulate ALL the team and subs for a very hardworking performance that took us into the play-off places, with that all important game in hand.
Let’s hope this good form continues to take us back towards the Championship, either via an automatic place or another grand day out at Wembley.
There is a long way to go but I feel that the last two games have been a turning point. We have beaten two quality sides in the division.
Come along and support us at Meadow Lane on Saturday and more importantly at the Keepmoat.
I want to see a return of the spirit we had during the “pub team having a laugh” days.
Monday night’s Louis Tomlinson charity match, meanwhile, was a superb night for Doncaster as fans came from all over the place, which was great for Bluebell Wood.
Dean Saunders’ son Callum scored for the Rovers XI and showed some nice touches. It’s just a pity he is with Crewe.
