RUTHLESS: Doncaster Rovers stun leaders Tranmere

ROVERS showed their killer instinct for the second successive game as Iain Hume earned them a dramatic win at League One leaders Tranmere.
It looked as though Rovers would be denied the victory when Jake Cassidy cancelled out Billy Paynter’s opener with just three minutes to go.
But Hume produced a superb one-two with Paynter and rifled the ball past Owain Fon Williams in injury time to secure a memorable triumph at Prenton Park.
Though on the wrong end of the possession and chances stats – as they were against Brentford on Saturday – Rovers once again showed it is goals that matter as they ruthlessly struck.
The first half proved to be an open and enthralling affair with the hosts having the better of the opportunities, particularly through the impressive Andy Robinson.
Tranmere almost went ahead when the on rushing Ben Gibson met a clearing header from Paul Keegan but could not keep his effort down.
James Wallace fluffed a great chance for the hosts when he chose to try and control a superb searching cross from Zoumana Bakayogo and sent it out of play.
Paynter almost matched his winner against Brentford when he rose to meet a superb cross from James Husband only to see his thunderous header crash back off the crossbar.
The hosts really should have opened the scoring eight minutes before the break when skipper Wallace charged in to meet a corner unmarked but powered it over the bar.
Woods then went full stretch to deny Robinson who collected a short corner and curled a shot towards the far post.
And Robinson continued to be Rovers’ tormentor in chief as he pulled away from his marker to side foot a shot first time only to see it fly over the bar.
Rovers showed their ruthless streak just three minutes into the second half.
Tommy Spurr’s cross fell to Paynter whose initial shot was blocked only for him to poke the ball through a crowded box at the second attempt three minutes into the second half.
Rovers faced waved after wave of attacks from the hosts but defended in superb fashion, both frantically and with great composure.
Rob Jones was key to that composure with his usual giant performance in the heart of defence.
But last gasp clearances from substitute David Syers and James Harper also kept Ronnie Moore’s side out.
All the effort looked to be in vain when Jake Cassidy hit a fine half volley from the edge of the box which deflected past Gary Woods in the dying moments of normal time.
There looked to be only one winner as Tranmere continued to attack.
But a fine break from Rovers was capped when Hume drilled home from a tight angle against his former club, sending Dean Saunders’ men into the play off places.
