Penalty drama puts Trinity on top

YOUNG footballers from Trinity Academy proved to be spot on as they came through a dramatic penalty shoot-out to edge closer to cup glory.

They held their nerve in a tense conclusion to the South Yorkshire Cup quarter-final clash with Sheffield's Tapton School to advance to the last four.

Jonny Bower was the hero for Trinity's Year 12 and 13 side, scoring the decisive spot-kick in the shoot-out to clinch a 5-4 victory after the tie had finished level at 90 minutes.

The match was played amid windy conditions at the Thorne academy, which is sponsored by Sir Peter Vardy's Emmanuel Schools Foundation.

And although the home side controlled much of the possession in the first half, they struggled to make their dominance pay until Andy Barrass gave them the advantage at the interval.

The game appeared to have turned on its head in the second half as Trinity, kicking into the wind, fell behind to a long-range strike and a goal forced in as a result of a penalty box scramble.

But man of the match Nathan Cuttell restored parity in the dying minutes, converting a penalty at the second attempt.

Trinity went on to secure victory by the odd penalty in nine during a nerve-wracking shoot-out – to the delight of students and staff.

Academy Principal Ian Brew said: "This is one of the most coveted football trophies in the area and we are thrilled that our have students battled through to the tournament semi-finals.

"They have shown tremendous skill and sportsmanship throughout their cup run and have been wonderful ambassadors for the Academy. Everyone is wishing them well in the last four."
