NEXT STOP WORLD: Classy Jamie McDonnell sets up world title bout

JAMIE McDonnell WILL fight for a world title after an eight round demolition of the tough Darwin Zamora in Sheffield.

The Nicaraguan’s corner threw in the towel at the end of the eighth round after McDonnell stepped on the gas in the IBF bantamweight title final eliminator.

Credit must go to Zamora for taking the fight on such notice and showing incredible amounts of steel and resolve under constant pressure.

But McDonnell – with a massive weight advantage – had his number from the first bell, quickly finding the range before building the combinations.

The left hook to the body proved a potent weapon for the 26-year-old, opening Zamora up for shots to the head.

McDonnell produced quite stunning accuracy at times but found himself up against an opponent who refused to budge for the majority of the bout.

The chipping away McDonnell had done truly told in the eighth round and Zamora struggled to defend against increasing punishment.

It seemed likely the fight would end in the ninth, but just as the fighters prepared to come out for the start of the round, the towel came in.

McDonnell has firmly staked his claim to being the greatest fighter in Doncaster boxing history after securing the first world title bout for a town fighter.

For a full fight round up and reaction, see next week’s Free Press, out Thursday.
