HEAD coach Tony Miller says he was surprised with the Dons’ quality on the ball in their 44-16 win over Featherstone Rovers U20 in their first pre-season friendly, writes Liam Hoden.

The clash at a foggy Post Office Road provided the first opportunity to see the new look squad ahead of their assault on the Co-operative Championship.

And Miller was pleased with what he saw.

He told the Free Press: “I was surprised with how good we were with the ball to be honest.

“We did some good stuff and it looks like everything is coming along nicely.

“We missed a couple of things with the cover defence so we’ll be looking to sharpen up but you expect things like that.

“All in all I was pleased and the new lads look to have settled in really well.”

Braces from Stewart Sanderson and Dennis Tuffour plus futher tries from Mike Emmett, Mike Kelly, Chris Spurr and Craig Fawcett saw the Dons secure the win at Featherstone.

The Dons are set to host Keighley Cougars on Sunday in another friendly, weather permitting.

Miller said: “It’s a step up from last week and we’re looking forward to it.

“Hopefully it’ll go ahead.”

Paul Cooke is again set to sit out the game as he completes his recovery from a broken knee cap.

But he should be back in contention for the final friendly against Super League side Wakefield Trinity Wildcats next weekend.

Miller said: “We’re not taking any chances with Paul because of the nature of the injury.

“He’s ready to go now but we won’t be risking him.

“He’s made a really good recovery but he’s a smart kid and knows what is best.

“Fran Welsh has also done really well to come back quickly because his ankle was in a right state.”

Tickets for Sunday’s friendly with Keighley are on sale now priced £10 adults, £5 concessions and £2 for under 16s.
