Miller: Dons will learn from Bull-dozing
TONY Miller believes the Dons will learn lessons from the Challenge Cup mauling by Bradford Bulls to boost their promotion push, writes Liam Hoden.
Despite leading inside the first minute through Russ Spiers’ try, Doncaster lost 72-6 at Odsal as the Super League giants put on a masterclass of skill, power and pace.
But Miller insists his side will be better off when they return to league action on Sunday at Championship One’s bottom side Gateshead Thunder.
He said: “The biggest thing hammered home to the lads was that you’ve got to try and keep the ball as long as you can.
“That’s definitely the case against Super League opposition but you can’t forget that in any game.
“I thought our ball control in the first half could have been better.
“Completion and better ball security have got to be our priorities going forward.
“I was really proud of the effort from the lads because they played for 80 minutes.
“We just couldn’t compete on the physical side of things and I knew physicality was going to be a massive test.
“I thought Bradford were exceptional and they’ve got a few potential internationals coming through.
“We’ve now got to dust ourselves down for the weekend and get back to achieving our goal for the season.”
The Dons travel to Gateshead who have lost all four games so far this term.
Skipper Craig Robinson is a major doubt for the game having been carried off with a knee injury at Bradford.
Lee Waterman was withdrawn as a precautionary measure due to an ongoing hamstring issue but should make the trip to the North East.
Paul Cooke, who missed the Challenge Cup game with an achilles issue, is in line for a return while Dean O’Loughlin and Nathan Powley are available for selection after completing respective two match bans.
