DOUBLING UP: Mick Butterfield scored two tries in the win over South Wales Scorpions.

THE Dons quashed a threatened fight back from struggling South Wales to open up a 13 point cushion in the promotion places.

And Tony Miller’s trigger happy outfit passed the 500 point mark for the season with the eight try performance.

Doncaster opened up a 10-0 lead inside the first 11 minutes with tries from Lee Waterman and Stewart Sanderson, the latter converted by Tom Hodson who went on to kick a further five goals.

The Scorpions hit back through Nathan Mossop with Shaun Owens converting.

Waterman went over again with Mick Butterfield capping a fine performance with a try to give the Dons a 20-6 lead on the half hour.

But South Wales roared back with Owens going over himself along with Dalton Grant to narrow the visitors’ lead to just two points at the break.

Fears of a shock result proved unfounded as the Dons ran out of sight by the hour mark.

Butterfield added a second with Craig Fawcett and Carl Hughes also crashing over as Doncaster moved 38-18 clear.

David James and Courtney Davies scored for the hosts, sandwiching a second for Fawcett as the Dons remained comfortable in the later stages.

With wins for top two Barrow and Whitehaven, the Dons remain in third but have a 13 point lead over fifth place.

The Dons do not have a game this weekend due to the Northern Rail Cup but return to action on July 15 with a top of the table clash against Barrow at the Keepmoat.
