MATCH REPORT: Doncaster Knights 24 Moseley 16
A STRONG first half performance helped the Knights to their first win in the Championship since January.
Gone were the niggling errors that have blighted the Knights’ start to the season as they built on a morale-boosting triumph over Nottingham in the British and Irish Cup.
It took a strong defensive performance to keep the visitors at bay after the break and the Knights kept their composure until losing men to the sin bin late in the game.
The two sides exchanged penalties in the opening six minutes with Jamie Lennard cancelling out Oliver Thomas’ opener for the visitors.
But the Knights quickly went into the ascendency with some smart and simple attacking rugby.
The first try came on ten minutes when Tom Luke sent an excellent long pass out to Tyson Lewis on the wing with the speedster racing in from just outside the 22 to score in the corner.
And within five minutes, Lewis had gone over again.
He collected a pass on 40m and cut across the field, ignoring the obvious pass to find his way over.
Lennard added the conversion plus a penalty five minutes later.
Moseley began to force their way into the game without really threating the Knights line.
The last say of the half went to Lennard who landed another long range penalty to cement his side’s lead.
The Knights lost Adam Kettle to the sin bin five minutes into the second half but defended valiantly despite the disadvantage.
Thomas landed a penalty for the visitors just as Kettle returned to the field.
The second half proved a largely lacklustre affair with the Knights seemingly content with soaking up pressure, which they did rather well.
But the game came to life in the final ten minutes, a period which started with Knights skipper Matt Challinor being sent to the sin bin.
Moseley immediately made the advantage count with Ben Pienaar going over following a line out, Thomas adding the conversion.
Dom Parsons went into the sin bin just as Challinor returned and Thomas slotted over a penalty to narrow the gap further.
But the Knights forced an error from the visitors and Lennard closed the game with a superbly-struck penalty from 35 metres.
