Marathon Man prepares for Rome

MARATHON man, Steve Dixon, is limbering up for his next challenge, with a date in his diary to be in Rome on March 21.

Since retiring from his role as coach for the Moorends Hornets and Stingers, Steve has taken to long distance running and already has three Flora London Marathons under his belt.

So determined was he to fulfil a bet made at his staff Christmas party, he signed up for his first London Marathon and started training on Christmas Day 2006.

In 2008 Steve, who is also a fully qualified FA referee, completed the challenge as part of his 50th birthday celebrations and, last year, he ditched the role of the lone runner when his son, Joe (18) joined him.

During the past three years, Steve, of Thorne, has raised 15,000 thanks to sponsorship from family, friends and work colleagues at Nisa Today, in Scunthorpe, where he works as a member of the Food Buying Team. This has mainly been donated to the When you Wish Upon a Star children's charity.

"I said in 2007 London was going to be a one off but I just love running - particularly in races. I am by no means a record breaker but as far as keeping fit, meeting some amazing people and particularly the fundraising, it is marvellous," said Steve.

"The Rome run looks great. My wife Julie and I went there three years ago for our Silver Wedding celebration but in March I will be focusing on getting my old body round the fantastic city and seeing the sights close up."
