THE sister of a South Yorkshire-born Manchester United footballer killed in the Munich Air Crash paid tribute to her late brother at Old Trafford.

The family of David Pegg, one of the eight United players killed in the 1958 tragedy, was a special guest at the ground for a game marking the 55th anniversary of the disaster.

Irene Beevers, aged 72, of Sherwood Avenue, Scawthorpe, near Doncaster, was among relatives remembering the so-called Busby Babes with a minute’s silence, ahead of Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Everton.

She said: “We are invited every year, along with all the other families. It is important to keep the memories of David and the others alive.”

The football world was plunged into shock by the tragedy when the club’s plane crashed as it was attempting to take off on a snow covered runway on February 6, 1958.

Highfields-born Mr Pegg is buried at Adwick’s Red House Cemetery.

* Bookmakers Paddy Power are already paying out on Manchester United - 12 points clear - to win this season’s Premier League title race, after Manchester City’s defeat by Southampton on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, United are preparing for a showdown with their former star striker Cristiano Ronaldo. They play his Spanish team Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday.
