LET THE FESTIVAL BEGIN: St Leger week kicks off at Town Moor
THE Listed Scarborough Stakes is the highlight on the first day of the St Leger festival at Doncaster.
Group One winner Kingsgate Native is among the field for the 3.05pm race over five furlongs, and is set for his first start for Newmarket trainer Robert Cowell with Richard Hughes on board.
Heading the 13 horse field according to the bookies is Sole Power under Johnny Murtagh.
The 2010 Nunthorpe winner has yet to taste victory this season but is a top performer on his day.
The day’s racing begins at 2pm with the £15,000 Arena Structures Nursery over seven furlongs.
William Buick mount Red Avenger has been backed in from 4/1 to 5/2 to head the nine strong field.
Second up is the £15,000 Napoleon Casinos and Resaurant Conditions Race at 2.30pm.
Six are set to go in the six furlong sprint with Ribaat as short as even money under Paul Hanagan.
The longest race of the day is the punchily-titled £20,000 Kat Communications Knowledge About Telecoms Conditions Stakes at 4.10pm over a mile and a quarter.
Only five go in the race but among the small field is Godolphin’s Swedish Sailor, making his return to action for the first time since last October.
Murtagh ride Beaten Up is the current bookies favourite.
Fourteen are set to go in the Elements Medispa Handicap at 4.45pm.
Strictly Silver under Jimmy Quinn is the pick for the seven furlong test but should face strong competition from Discression, who is chasing a third successive victory.
Racing concludes on Wednesday with the BJS Handicap at 5.15pm over five furlongs with 20 set to go.
Haajes currently heads the day’s largest field but the market suggests punters are stuggling to make their pick from the competitive field.
The biggest crowd pleaser of the day is set to be the Clipper Logistics Legends Classified Stakes at 3pm, run over the straight mile.
A total of 19 legends will return to the saddle in aid of Jack Berry House and the redevelopment of Doncaster’s very own Northern Racing College.
American Hall of Fame jockey Julie Krone returns to defend the crown she won last year but faces strong competition to 24-time Classic winner Mick Kinane who won another legends contest at the Grand National meeting in April.
Previous St Leger winners Kevin Darley, George Duffield and John Reid will all take part.
Krone’s mount Sunnyside Tom is the current favourite.
Kinane will be on board Patriotic, Darley rides Save The Bees, Duffield is on Elijah Pepper and Reid mounts Chookie Avon.
