New world number one Jamie McDonnell’s next step towards title glory looks set to take place in his home town after a twist in negotiations over his bout with Hugo Cazares, writes Liam Hoden.

The Mexican’s camp won the original purse bid and seemed intent on taking the WBC Bantamweight Title eliminator to Central America.

But Cazares’ people failed to come up with the cash before the deadline, putting McDonnell’s manager Dennis Hobson in the negotiation driving seat.

The good news continued for McDonnell after he was bumped up to number one in the world by the WBC.

And Hobson intends for the biggest fight of his man’s career to take place on home soil.

He told the Free Press: “We knew this scenario was likely from the off.

“I knew the Mexicans didn’t have the money to meet this bid and that they just wanted us to buy it off them.

“We played a bit of poker with them and they’ve defaulted on the purse bid.

“We’ve now made them a good offer and we’re just waiting for them to come back.

“It’s unfortunate we’ll be waiting so long for the fight but it’s in Jamie’s best interests that it be on his stamping ground.”

Due to Euro 2012 and the Olympics, it looks set to be a quiet summer for boxing.

Hobson expects McDonnell’s bout with Cazares to take place in September and is eager for it to take place in Doncaster.

He said: “At the very least it’s going to be at a packed Dome.

“But I’ve not ruled out a big outdoor event at the racecourse or the Keepmoat.

“This is a huge fight for Jamie and it deserves that billing.

“He’s number one now which means anyone who wants the WBC title has to go through him.

“If we can get him over this Cazares hurdle, he’s heading for the big time.”

McDonnell relinquished his European crown to chase his world title dream.
