Golf weekly: Walsh ends season on winning note

IAN Walsh won a closely contested Midweek Medal at Thornhurst Park on countback, writes John Molloy.

Walsh and Norman Collier had both carded 73s, while George Andrewatha’s 77 earned him third spot.

Kevin Phillipson (72) was the clear winner of the Saturday medal, beating Roy Maskerry (73) and Garry North (74) into the minor places.

Countback was also required to separate the top two in the Sunday Stableford, Maskerry getting the nod over Jon Sandham after the pair tied on 35 points.

Doncaster Golf Club’s Monday Stableford was won by John Gegg with 38 points, while Jim McLeod and Bryan Ward tallied 37 to share second place.

The rearranged ladies’ EWGA Medal 7 was won by Judith Fearns with 72 with Sue Harbon and Anne Shillitto sharing second place on 73.

The Saturday Niblicks Stableford went to Stuart Hall (37) on countback from Martin Train.

Roy Parr (34) was third with Paul Wright (32) fourth.

The Rabbits Bring and Win Stableford was won by Peter Baines (35), while Henry Masterson (34) claimed the Sunday Niblicks Stableford.

Having now reached the end of the main 2012 competition season, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jill McGarvie (Doncaster), Len Layton (Thornhurst Park), Pam Whalley (Wheatley), Wendy Powney (Doncaster Town Moor), Graham Wilmot( Hickleton) and Tim Jackson (Sheffield Union) for their contributions to this column.
