Golf weekly by John Molloy: Deighton rolls back the years

THE Gentlemens’ Past Captains’ Plate at Doncaster Town Moor resulted in a clear win for Mal Deighton with 36 points.

Runner up Dave Walker (33) was followed by Ray Smith (32) in third position.

The Ladies’ Past Captains’ competition, held on the same day, went to Cynthia Pickersgill with 30 points.

In a tie on 29 points Wendy Powney pipped Rita Waring for second place on countback.

The Saturday Stableford was won by Ian Siddle with an impressive 40 points.

Second place went to Roger Greenwood (39) with Steve Arnold (37) third.

The Sunday Betterball Stableford went to John Swinbourne and Steve Cunningham with 42 points on countback from Neil Smith and Tony Early.

Third place, also with 42 points, went to Martin Johnson and Terry Breame.

The ladies’ Anniversary Waltz Stableford for teams of three at Doncaster Golf Club went to Chris Miller, Kim Turner and Gill Legard with 67 points.

Tied for second place on 64 points were Sheila Robinson, Chris Ellis and Beryl Batchelor, and Lynne Brown, Cilla Leach and Bev Gallagher.

Pat Taylor and Linda Bell (63) finished in fourth place.

The Monday Stableford resulted in a tie on 36 points between Thomas Ciullo and Bryan Ward.

Third place went to Gary Garside (34) with Ian Gamble and Dave Morris sharing fifth place with 33.

The Saturday Niblicks Stableford was played on the first really cold morning of autumn with a sprinkling of snow on the frozen ground.

Terry Vallance took the honours with 34 points.

The minor places had to be sorted out by countback with Paul Wright edging out George Lacey, both having returned 33 points.

The Sunday Niblicks Stableford ended with three players on 33 points.

Once again countback was needed to sort out the top three places which went to Dave Fenton, John Naylor and Ian Robinson.
