Golf weekly by John Molloy: Charity Cup day hits the spot

LADIES Charity Cup day at Doncaster Town Moor - which helped raise £600 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance - saw Wendy Powney win the Stableford with 31 points.

Juliet Swinbourne finished runner up with 27 points.

The Saturday Stableford was won comfortably by Ian Bentley with 37 points.

Second place went to Les Coulstock with 33 points with Graham Priestley (32) third.

The Sunday Betterball Medal saw a feast of low scoring with Richard Scaife and Tom Kirk coming out on top with an impressive net 61.

Close behind came Dean and John Hubery who pipped Paul Marsden and Steve Ashwell for second place, both pairs returning 62s.

At Doncaster Golf Club, the first event of the Junior Winter League saw Connor Longworth win comfortably with an impressive 38 points.

Jacob Causier (33) came second, followed by James Bellamy (31) in third.

The mixed Monday Stableford was closely contested with Bill Worsfold topping the leaderboard with 39 points.

He was followed by a five-way tie for second place on 38 points between Stuart Eland, Robin Newton, A Vickers, Alan Hessell and A Lubeck.

Four ladies took part with Jayne Daughtery leading them on 32 points.

The ladies Harlequin Stableford had to be decided by countback, both leading teams returning scores of 58 points.

Jill McGarvie, Bev Gallagher and Carole Morris came out on top ahead of Sue Salmon, Kirsty Wilson and Gill Legard.

Third place went to Cynthia Smith, Janet Green and Linda Bell with 57 points, followed in fourth place on 52 points by Jayne Daughtery, Nesta Lupson and Greta Curtis.

The Saturday Niblicks Stableford was a Lomas family affair.

Father Steve Lomas won with 36 points with son Matthew Lomas third on 32 points. In between Martin carded 33 points.

The Sunday Niblicks Stableford went to Henry Masterson on 38 points followed by a tie on 37 points between Jeff Coupe and Ian Robinson.
