NORTHERN Ireland international midfielder Sammy Clingan has joined Doncaster Rovers on a short term deal.

The 28-year-old was a free agent after leaving Coventry City in the summer.

He has been training with Rovers for the last week with a view to joining and the two parties agreed terms on Friday morning.

Central midfield has been an area of concern for boss Dean Saunders, despite him stating this week he was satisfied with options in more attacking areas.

A defensive injury crisis then appeared to put a deal for Clingan in jeopardy.

But with Paul Quinn’s groin problem proving to manageable on a week-to-week basis, and Jamie McCombe expected to return ahead of schedule, Saunders has taken the opportunity to add combative midfielder Clingan to his squad.

Clingan started his career with Wolves before going on to play for Chesterfield, Nottingham Forest, Norwich and Coventry.

He has agreed a rolling month-to-month deal, subject to Football League ratification.
