Doncaster Rovers 1 Shrewsbury Town 0

ROVERS returned to winning ways at the Keepmoat Stadium as Billy Paynter's penalty proved enough to tame the Shrews.

But it was a somewhat nerve-wracking finish as Doncaster just did enough to hold out for their first home win in four games.

Paynter struck from the spot after just three minutes, sending Chris Weale the wrong way after the impressive David Cotterill was fouled by Matt Richards.

It was the perfect start for a side who have rarely performed to their full capabilities in front of their home supporters this term.

The goal not only settled the crowd - but led to Rovers producing some of their best passing football this term.

Dave Syers had a goal ruled out for offside after good work from Kyle Bennett on the left, while Terry Gornell headed the visitors' best opening just wide.

Rovers may not have created the number of chances they had against Preston, but they looked more composed on the ball, kept possession better and looked brighter in general.

James Harper was at the centre of much of Rovers' impressive build-up, while Iain Hume was a constant menace to Shrewsbury's back-line.

The second period was not so impressive, however, and it led to a nervous finish as Rovers dropped deeper and deeper as they sought to hold onto the single goal lead.

James Husband and Hume might have eradicated that tension if they hit the target with the hosts' best chances after the break.

But in the end a neat and tidy Shrewsbury outfit just did not have enough firepower to break through, Marvin Morgan wasting their best chance when he headed wide with the goal at his mercy.
