DONCASTER Athletic Club are on the fast track to success, according to chairman Kev Lincoln.

Former road runner Lincoln told a sell-out annual presentation evening at the Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday night that negotiations to take over the running of the track and associated facilities from Doncaster Council had been finalised.

The former policemen also revealed that the club would now be working on raising funds to erect a clubhouse at their Lakeside home.

Membership of Doncaster AC has increased five-fold to more than 500 since the club moved to the new track in 2007.

There has also been a three-fold increase in the number of qualified coaches during the same period.

Doncaster were named Development Club of the Year for 2012 – a national award which also took into account their commitment to disabled athletes.

They also fielded a record number of athletes at the English Schools’ Track & Field Championships in Gateshead.

“If we aren’t going places then I don’t know who is,” said Mr Lincoln, who was presented with a lifetime honorary membership of the club by Olympic women’s 1,500m finalist Laura Weightman.

Deputy chairman Mark Hudson added: “Last year was a pretty monumental year for the club.

“There is absolutely no doubt that we wouldn’t be in the position we are now but for Kevin’s hard work and dedication.

“As well as all the negotiations regarding the stadium, he has put in endless hours down at the track organising school sports days, taster days and the like, all of which has created important income for the club.”
