JAMIE McDonnell could be set to take a bite out of the Big Apple as he bids for world title glory.

Negotiations are on-going between McDonnell’s manager Dennis Hobson and the camp of Mexican KO king Julio Ceja, who will battle the Hatfield fighter for the IBF Bantamweight crown.

While both camps would ideally like the bout to be held in their own country, the location where the fight looks most likely to take place is New York City.

McDonnell has confirmed he is likely to fight on the undercard of the WBC light welterweight title clash between Danny Garcia and Zab Judah which will be held at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn on April 27.

The 26-year-old said: “I told Dennis that I didn’t want the fight to be staged in Mexico as it would be hard to get a win out there.

“It looks like it’s going to be in New York, with Danny Garcia v Zab Judah which means it’s neutral ground.

“If that happens a lot of my mates will be putting flights and hotels on their credit cards because this is a once-in-a-lifetime fight.”

McDonnell is confident Ceja will not stand in the way of his bid to become Doncaster’s first ever world champion despite his impressive unbeaten record of 22 stoppages from 24 fights.

“Ceja doesn’t scare me and I believe I will beat him,” McDonnell said.

“He will be able to punch but he won’t be able to hit me, I’ll have plenty of head movement. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Amir Khan looks set to provide chief support on the night and Hobson’s burgeoning relationship with the former world champion is said to be a big factor in getting McDonnell on the card.
