BOXING: Gavin McDonnell tipped for the top

GAVIN McDonnell can position himself at the crest of the next wave of top British super bantamweights, according to trainer Stefy Bull.
The unbeaten 26-year-old goes after his second professional crown on Saturday night at the Dome in a British Masters title bout with Dudley’s Dean Anderson.
And Bull says the way is clear for McDonnell to force his way into the major domestic title picture provided he can continue his excellent progress.
He said: “Gavin has impressed a great deal since he turned professional and he’s stolen the show on the last couple of cards.
“He’s shown a massive amount of maturity and a lot of smarts in there and he’s definitely going places.
“He’s got some of the buzz off what Jamie has been doing but he’s proving himself worthy of a bit of his own buzz.
“You’ve got Kid Galahad, Rendal Munroe and Scott Quigg who are up at that world level but them moving up has left the division wide open domestically.
“Provided Gav comes through this, we’ll look at bringing him back down to six and eight rounders to get him ready for that step up.
“This time next year he could easily be wearing an English or British title.”
A win for Hatfield fighter McDonnell is not a given with Anderson winning five of his seven fights so far.
Bull said: “This is definitely a 50-50 fight, Anderson will be no mug.
“We’ve been told he’s a bit of a puncher so Gav needs to be smart.
“But I’m still really confident he’ll have his hand raised.
“He took Scott Gladwin apart last time out and I think he’d have done a real number on him had we not told him to take his time with it being a ten rounder.”
Also on the bill, big hitting Stainforth light middleweight Micky Davies will meet Esham Pickering managed Vaclav Skromach.
And Woodlands’ former ABA champion Jason Cunningham will fight as a professional in his home town for the first time following his six wins from six fights so far.
