DONCASTER Rovers were back in the groove at Cantley Park on Friday morning - but there were some notable absentees.

Dean Saunders had been expected to offer several of the players whose contract expired at Rovers this summer the opportunity to join the club for pre-season training.

But there were no signs of any such players as Rovers’ wafer-thin squad were put through their paces by fitness coach Mal Purchase.

Simon Gillett, one of the out of contract players tipped to re-sign for Rovers, took to Twitter early on Friday to wish the club all the best and announce he was set for “pastures new”.

There was no sign of Mustapha Dumbuya, who had reportedly began contract talks with Doncaster at the end of last season.

While James Baxendale, who is thought to have been invited back for training, also did not appear.

Under contract defender Habib Beye, who trained for the most part in France last season, was also absent - increasing speculation that the experienced Frenchman sees his future away from the Keepmoat Stadium.

Martin Woods and Chris Brown, who both had their fair share of injury problems last term, were among the small number of experienced professionals involved in the light training session.

Several of Rovers’ youth team players also took part in the running and gym work.
