TWO of Doncaster Rovers’ intrepid Inca Trekkers became members of the 13,000ft high club last week - when they were presented with surprise awards while scaling the Andes.
James O’Connor collected the Retford supporters branch player of the year award for last season, while James Coppinger was handed the Mark Hickling away player of the year trophy.
The gongs were presented by Retford branch secretary Paul Mayfield as the ten-strong Rovers team, including midfielder Mark Wilson and media manager Steve Uttley, reached Sun Gate overlooking Machu Picchu.
Paul said: “We thought it was a special way to end the trek, so we carried the awards all week without anyone knowing.
“It was an honour to hand them over overlooking one of the wonders of the world, Machu Picchu.”
O’Connor, Coppinger and Wilson will return to pre-season training a week on Monday.
Rovers’ first pre-season friendly is at Armthorpe Welfare on Thursday, July 7.
