Gordon Staniforth has resigned as manager of Doncaster Rovers Belles.

He guided Belles to second place in FAWSL2 after taking over from John Buckley last year, following the club’s high profile demotion to the second tier.

Sunderland were crowned FAWSL2 champions on Sunday.

Belles said in a statement: “It is with regret that we announce that Gordon Staniforth, our Head Coach, has tendered his resignation, which the club has reluctantly accepted.

“Under Gordon’s leadership the Belles have had a fantastic season and against all odds almost won the title, taking it to the final game of the season.

“We wish to thank Gordon for all his hard work, inspiration and leadership on the field and wish him every success in the next stage of his career.

“Julie Chipchase, Director of Football, former player and manager of the Doncaster Belles will be leading the search for the new Head Coach.”

Former York City striker Staniforth said earlier this week that Belles would “redouble their efforts” next season to gain promotion.
