Doncaster Rovers Belles got their first point of the season following a 2-2 draw with Everton last night.

Belles were determined to overturn their previous 3-1 defeat to the Toffees in the Continental Cup earlier this month when the pair met once more - this time in Merseyside.

Sue Smith started her second game of the season for Belles but she and her team-mates found themselves 1-0 down when Nikita Parris hit her second goal against the Doncaster club to put the visitors ahead moments after the interval.

Tori Williams - who had been struggling with an achilles injury - levelled for the visitors in the 65th minute but John Buckley’s outfit found themselves behind once more as Chaney Boye-Hlorkah put Everton back in front three minutes later.

Subsitute Cheryl Foster, who came on for Emma Thomson, struck another equaliser from the penalty spot to mark her first goal for the club she joined from Liverpool.

That point sees bottom-placed Belles a point adrift of Lincoln Ladies who were beaten 3-2 by Liverpool on Wednesday night.

Buckley hailed several of his players for last night’s display, telling the Free Press he was particularly delighted with “top performers” Smith, Williams, Foster and Lyndsey Cunningham.

Belles are next in action on Tuesday away at Lincoln Ladies. Kick-off is 7.30pm.
