A last-gasp comeback from the Belles was just not enough as league champions Liverpool progressed in the Continental Cup thanks to a Natasha Dowie double.
Second half strikes from Beth England and Jess Sigsworth set-up a nervy finish for the Reds who had raced into a 3-0 lead.
Liverpool went ahead through Dowie in the eighth minute before Amanda Da Costa doubled their advantage five minutes later.
And just as the Belles were gaining invaluable territory, the Reds added their third through hitman Dowie for a 3-0 half time lead.
A strong start for Doncaster was eventually rewarded in the 59th minute when England headed home a Rhiannon Roberts free-kick.
And nine minutes before the final whistle, England international Sigsworth sent a header past Libby Stout from Lyndsey Cunningham’s pinpoint delivery for 3-2, setting up a tense finale.
However, the Reds remained resolute as they clinched victory for a result which saw the Belles unable to qualify for the knockout stages of the cup.
The Belles now head into a lengthy break before their FAWSL2 crunch match with leaders Sunderland on July 26.
