The first home game of the season saw Belles’ under-16s face Handsworth Juniors with the hosts’ strength paying off, writes Marie Gibb.

The first eight minutes saw Doncaster exert pressure on their opponents and in the 10th minute Kaitlyn Doncaster struck the ball sweetly from just outside the 18-yard box into the top corner.

The Belles tried to add to their tally with shots from Kesley O’Driscoll, Caitlin Gunnell and KD Roberts. However, a well-delivered corner saw the ball pass through several players and find the back of the net for Handsworth.

Rowan Newman put the Belles in front once more when she fired in a pinpoint delivery with seven minutes of the second half gone.

Georgia Whattam then earned her ‘Lass of the Grass’ award by making two vital saves to deny Handsworth.

The away side began to apply the pressure and gain momentum, however, the Belles were equal to it with some determined play from the likes of Jade Smedley and Melissa Waters.

A strong team performance saw Belles claim the points with a 2-1 win.
