Paul Dickov is hoping for a birthday tonic at Bradford City.

Rovers’ boss turns 42 tomorrow and, after three games without a win, the Scot is eyeing something a pick-me-up at Valley Parade.

“I never plan anything on a Saturday night, regardless of whose brithday it is,” joked Dickov.

“Let’s hopefully get a result on Saturday and I’ll be able to enjoy a little glass of wine on Saturday night.”

Dickov, whose side lie 20th in League One, has been keen to downplay expectations this season and has pointed to the club’s off-field issues last summer as an explanation for Rovers’ slow start.

And whatever the outcome at Bradford tomorrow, he won’t be getting carried away.

“We’d all like to be sitting in the top half of the table, but we are where we are at the minute,” he said.

“We expected it to be tough, due to what happened in pre-season.

“If we win on Saturday we could be mid-table with a couple of games in hand.

“I’ve said it all along, if we win a couple of games it’s important not to get carried away and when we lose a couple of games we don’t get too downbeat.

“That tends to be what’s happening at the moment.

“We need to get a bit of a happy medium on things.”

On-loan Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone will start tomorrow, after Dickov confirmed that Jed Steer had returned to Aston Villa.

Steer’s three-month loan had been due to expire after tomorrow’s game.

James Coppinger is set to return to the squad after training for the first time yesterday since turning his ankle last week.
