Paul Dickov admitted he was surprised to see Liam Wakefield on trial with Walsall because he was led to believe the defender would be signing for the Saddlers.

Wakefield rejected the offer of a new contract with hometown club Rovers to explore other options, taking up a trial with Dean Smith’s side.

Dickov says he does not blame the Cusworth-born defender for the situation and has wished him well.

“Wakey came to see me last week, he still hadn’t signed his contract,” Dickov said. “I was under the impression that he was signing for Walsall but it looks as if he’s gone on trial.

“There’s been a contract offer there since the end of last season but he hasn’t signed.

“I don’t necessarily blame Liam because he’s a good kid and I genuinely wish him all the best.”

Wakefield started for Walsall in their 1-1 draw with Aston Villa on Saturday.

The 21-year-old received a boost to his hopes of landing a contract after Saddlers boss Smith said he would not be looking to the loan market to cover his defensive gaps.

“I’ll have a chat with Liam and see where we go from here,” Smith said. “Liam is only 21 and he is one of a few we are looking at, the place is up for grabs.

“There is no doubt we need a centre-back, we need someone to come in whether it’s a progressive young player or a more experienced one. But it won’t be a loan.”
