Darren Ferguson has urged his Doncaster Rovers players not to allow their heroics against Wigan Athletic to all be for nothing when they visit Chesterfield tonight.

Rovers were fully deserving of their 3-1 win over title favourites Wigan at the weekend, a result which saw a ray of hope appear in their bid for League One survival.

But Ferguson says it will all go to waste if they fail to secure another victory at the Proact Stadium tonight.

“We’ve got to make sure that Saturday was not a waste of time, beating Wigan and not getting a result at Chesterfield,” he said.

“It’s three points at the end of the day. That’s what we got and we need another for beating Chesterfield. It’s really important.

“That’s already been stressed to the players. It was right after the game on Saturday.”

Rovers sit six points from safety with four games to go.

Victory at Chesterfield, coupled with defeat for either Shrewsbury Town or Fleetwood Town against Sheffield United and Millwall respectively could see Rovers sit three points from safety by the end of the night.

After 16 league games without a win, Saturday’s triumph over Wigan has raised hope Rovers could pull off the great escape.

But Ferguson insists his players still have their feet firmly on the ground.

“The win gave everyone a lift but don’t get me wrong, we weren’t dancing all over the place because we know we’ve still got a job on,” he said.

“But what it will do is, if there was anyone in the dressing room lacking a bit of belief, that game on Saturday will have give them that.

“It doesn’t mean you’re now going to win the next four games.

“My clear instructions to the players is we have to get to the same standards consistently and if they do, they’ve shown what they can do by beating the best team in the league.”
