Sprotbrough lifted the Doncaster Sunday Alliance League KO Cup for a record-breaking third year in succession following Sunday’s final at Bentley Colliery, writes Steve Hossack.

But they needed extra-time to get the better of Premier Division rivals Canal Tavern as super sub Paul Toomey came off the bench to score a hat trick and seal a 3-2 comeback win.

Thorne side Tavern grabbed the lead after just a couple of minutes when striker Ross Ebbage produced a clinical finish.

Ebbage, who had stood in for keeper Neil Murray in the club’s run-in, had to do so again after he was injured minutes later on his return to action.

Despite losing the services of a key attacker, Tavern, who finished fourth in the league, were good value for their interval lead.

When Darren Fell made it 2-0 after the break against the run of play, Sprotbrough’s hopes of a first-ever double looked set to be dashed.

The holders, who finished 14 points clear of runners-up Graceholme, rung the changes at that stage, bringing on top scorer Toomey amongst others.

It was Toomey who put his side back into the game with a goal on 70 minutes.

He struck again five minutes later when heading home from a corner to level the scores.

Sprotbrough failed to capitalise on further chances and the game went into extra-time during which Toomey lobbed Ebbage to claim the winner with his 22nd goal of the season.

“The league was the big challenge this season but we are delighted to have done the double,” said a club spokesman.
