Marauders never put a foot wrong
Scunthorpe Barbarians 1
Moorends-Thorne Marauders 96
PETER Green's first goal for the Moorends-Thorne Marauders when he took over the reins was to win the Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire minor championship.
And this was achieved last Saturday with their eighth straight win of the season, this time at Scunthorpe Barbarians.
The Marauders, needing one point to secure the minor championship, made no mistake in what could have been a tricky fixture.
They powered into a 18-0 lead in the first five minutes with tries coming from Chris Allen, Wayne Green and Mark Roach, all converted by Ryan Rafferty, set the scene for the rest of the game. Moorends raced into a 42-0 half-time score which included a further two tries from Wayne Green, and one each for Tom Brandham, Gav Millward and Greg Mills, Ryan Rafferty landing a further conversion, 0-42.
The Marauders never let their concentration lapse or took their foot off during the first 20 minutes of the second half with further tries being added by Wayne Green (2), Chris Allen and Jason Blanchard, all converted by Ryan Rafferty, 0-66.
Scunthorpe, realising that the Marauders' main goal had turned towards nilling them, became party poopers when Lewis Jones landed a 40-metre drop-goal, 1-66.
From the kick-off 17-year-old Alex Palmer, made a massive hit on the Barbarians' ball carrier, forcing the ball loose.
From the resulting scrum Chris Allen sent Jason Blanchard over for a converted try, 1-72.
The last 20 minutes saw the Marauders bombing chances as they forced the pass when normally they would have gone to ground.
They did manage to put a further 24 points on the board - from Chris Allen, Adam Pickles, Craig Hookway, Danny Hornsby and Ryan Rafferty who also added a further two conversions, 1-96.
Man of the match was awarded to Alex Palmer.
