HATFIELD Main got off to a dream start on Saturday with a sparkling performance at Blidworth that bodes well for the future.
Callum McCormack had to come off early in the game with a deep cut to the shin and Kirk Frost left the bench to replace hi
m. Frost was not in the starting eleven due to still suffering the effects of an injury picked up some time ago, but was called on earlier in the game than planned. No need to worry, with his very first touch the ball was in the net, a lovely lob from 20 yards. Before half time, Johnny Moore had taken full advantage of a defensive mistake by Blidworth to double his side's lead.
Main came out after the break with another change, Tom Kinghorn having replaced Darren Brown. The home side looked in disarray with Hatfield running rings round them. Kirk Frost was always likely to score again,
and did so with a 25-yard screamer that the home keeper hardly saw.
Kinghorn had to be replaced soon after because of a toe injury, 16 year old Scott Lambert coming on in his place. Main continued to look dangerous and Lee Winterman got a deserved goal with a beautiful curling ball from quite wide on the left that found the far top corner
of the net and left the keeper stranded in mid-air.
All in all a fine team effort, with perhaps Winterman just being 'man of the match' with a hard working, never say die performance. His goal was the icing on the cake. Frost also has claims, as have two or three others, but the team came away feeling that a good day's work had been done. Competition for places is hot at the moment, and the manager has hard decisions to make.
Main are at home on Saturday when Clipstone Welfare provide the opposition. Kick off is 3pm and we hope for a good level of support.
