Girls net nearly £2,000
YOUNG netballers who played throughout the night in a 24-hour sporting marathon have raised almost £2,000 for charity.
The girls from Trinity Academy in Thorne were sponsored for their nocturnal netball challenge, which started at 2pm on a Friday afternoon finishing at the same time the next day.
Around 50 students and teachers took part, along with a team of Year 6 students from some of the Academy's feeder primary schools – Green Top, Brooke and King Edward – who joined in on the Friday afternoon.
Split into teams comprising seven players from all year groups, the girls had breaks between matches when they could sleep, eat snacks and a meal provided by the Academy's catering team or watch films.
Some parents and family members came along to watch and support the girls through the challenge.
Academy student Emma Skillcorn (11) from Thorne, raised more than £60, she said: "It was tiring but a lot of fun."
Natalie Worthington (12) from Moorends, who raised £53, added: "When we finished we had a party and it was someone's birthday as well as so we had a big cake."
The money raised will be donated to the fund for the Academy's three chosen charities: Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice, SAO Cambodia and Cancer Research UK.
